Joseph Koffi · My story

Tennis, a story
about people.

Player, coach, father. Three perspectives on tennis, one belief: understand the person to better support the player.

I am Joseph Koffi, a tennis and mental performance coach. Originally from Togo and holding a French state tennis coaching qualification since 2005, I put personality, motivation and human connection at the heart of my coaching.

01 — The background

From player to coach.
Always the person.

Originally from Togo, I left Africa for France, bringing my passion for tennis with me. I earned my Brevet d’État d’éducateur sportif du premier degré, option tennis — a French state sports educator qualification specialising in tennis — on 29 June 2005. First a player, then a coach, I turned that passion into my profession: helping other players progress.

With 25 years of experience as a tennis coach, I have worked at several clubs and held sports director roles. My experience ranges from supporting club players to coaching Davis Cup players, including my son. These different journeys inform one shared belief: coaching should start with the person, their motivations and their environment.

I support players, parents and coaches, as well as clubs, academies and tennis organisations. In French or English, the starting point remains the same: listen, understand, then adapt.

02 — My training

Learning to better
understand the person.

Alongside my tennis qualification, I have undertaken training in the Enneagram, neuro-linguistic programming and hypnosis. These reflect my interest in self-understanding and supporting people.

01

Enneagram

Training in the Enneagram.

02

Neuro-linguistic programming

Personal development training: NLP.

03

Hypnosis

Training in hypnosis.

My belief
The player doesn’t adapt to the method.
The method adapts to the player.

The same instruction does not have the same effect on two players. My role is to find, with you, the words, reference points and routines that help you move forward.

03 — Passing it on

A coach, and a father too.

I am also the father and coach of my son, a Davis Cup player. Tennis is therefore part of both my professional and family life. I bring both a coach’s and a parent’s perspective to my work.

For the parents I support, the question often goes beyond the next match result: how do you encourage your child, find the right words and give them space to build their own path?

I offer time for that conversation: to better understand the player while caring for the relationship with the person.

04 — International experience

Different places,
different views of the game.

My son with Félix Auger-Aliassime

My son’s journey has also taken me into different training environments. I have accompanied him at academies including JTCC in College Park, near Washington, D.C., in the United States, and the Auger-Aliassime academy in Canada. These experiences are part of our shared tennis story.

I have also contributed to the work of the Togolese Tennis Federation. Across my country of origin, my career in France and these international experiences, I keep the same guiding principle: understand the people I support and adapt my approach to their circumstances.

05 — The encounters

Encounters and connections.

Tennis has also given me opportunities to spend time with players, share moments and build connections over the years.

Among those I have spent time with are Frances Tiafoe and Gaël Monfils. With Frances, a friendly bond developed. I also remember walking alongside Richard Gasquet at Roland-Garros, simply enjoying a conversation.

These encounters are part of my tennis story. Beyond the familiar names, what stays with me most are the conversations and moments shared through a common passion.

06 — My approach

Understand what
happens within you.

Tennis players face many questions: why does doubt creep in? Where do certain fears come from? Why can reactions change so much from one match to the next? I use the Enneagram to explore these questions through self-understanding, motivations and responses to pressure.

My aim is to help you understand yourself better, find reference points that suit you and progress in your tennis. A profile remains a starting point for reflection, never a permanent label: I connect it to your experience, your goals and the situations you encounter on court.

Les 9 Visages du Champion

In my book, I present nine profiles to explore the relationship between personality and tennis. An invitation to understand yourself better as a player, offer better support as a parent and communicate better as a coach.
